FIPC STAFF QUALIFICATIONS

SHIRLEY ARNOLD – MFL TUTOR

I am a past student of the PGCE programme at the FIPC, I graduated in July 2004 with a grade 1. My NQT year was at Wormley Primary School in Herts where I am currently still teaching. For three years I taught a 3/4 mixed year group and I am now this year, teaching year 5.

Having lived in France for four and a half years I am fluent in French and have first hand knowledge and understanding of the French/European culture. This experience led directly to me being offered the role of MFL subject leader responsible for implementing the teaching of French throughout KS2 by September 2009. At present I am engaged in the achievement of the "Foundation International Award" for my school.

Isobel Barron - Art & Design

Subject Qualification: BEd (hons) subject specialism: Art & Design

My course was the first year of the new style BA QTS (though not so new now!!) where we trialled the new format with our main specialism running alongside the Education Studies. This meant spending equal time on both areas over the four year duration of the degree. The reason behind this was to ensure that individuals completed the BA equivalent in their subject specialism whilst gaining a more in depth knowledge of child development, rather than completing a subject degree and just one year teacher training. As a result I went to two colleges, solely studying art one year and combined studies for the other three. My main area of interest is 3D art, particularly ceramics but I love ‘making and doing’, so using mixed media to create sculptures or other artefacts is right up my street! I like exploring the quality of materials and using them in unusual, creative or innovative ways. I always look for opportunities of reusing and recycling materials and feel that you can make art with anything. I love my subject and will seek opportunities to use art to teach a range of concepts in the primary curriculum as I feel it is a natural way for young children to learn- using all their senses to make sense of the world in which we live. I enjoy my lecturing position as I feel I can influence the way in which new teachers to the profession view and teach this subject. I aim my sessions at the non- specialist so that everyone can see how easy it is to teach art. You do not have to be good at the subject yourself but must have a ‘can do’ attitude, and in your classroom provide a range of opportunities for the pupils to experience. All the feedback from past trainees has been positive as they have enjoyed the informal atmosphere and practical workshop sessions that have enabled them to develop their professional knowledge and understanding.

Sonia Burnard

Sonia Burnard began teaching in secondary school and later in primary schools. She spent twenty seven years in the teaching of children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and has written and presented many areas in the teaching and learning of all children. She manages the school centred initial teacher training initiative, Forest Independent Primary Collegiate, which trains main stream teachers with a focus on SEN and behaviour management. She is also a governor for two main stream schools. Sonia supervises and is external examiner for PhD students. She supports action research in schools and in trainees and has a background that focuses on the development of ways to share good practice and of encouraging others to develop new areas of study.

PETER GORDON - R.E.

Has been lecturing at The FIPC for eight years.

Began teaching as a Primary Class Teacher and R.E. co-ordinator, became a Primary Headteacher and recently became an Educational Consultant.

The input of his lectures covers the statutory context, subject knowledge - the world's six major religions, planning and delivering an R.E. lesson. There is an assignment - "writing up the planning, delivery and evaluation of an R.E. lesson within the statutory and school context, considering as to what motivates children to learn".

Another subject on which Peter lectures is Establishing a culture of Communications in Schools where the input provides an introduction to the complexity of school life and considers what makes communications effective and what barriers exist.
Also applying for jobs.

At an appropriate point in the year, Peter's session offers guidance on preparing and writing applications and being interviewed. Practical activities offer the opportunity to take part in and observe segments of interviews with school senior managers.

Richard Greenfield

Richard served as a Headteacher for 32 years, firstly in the London Borough of Havering and latterly at St Edmund’s School in the London Borough of Enfield. Qualified as a teacher from St Mary’s College Twickenham, and obtained a B.Sc from the University of London, and later a Master’s Degree from CNAA. Most recently he has been awarded a Doctorate from University of London.
Richard has worked for FIPC for a number of years as Thematic Learning Co-ordinator and has now been appointed to run the GTP element of the Collegiate’s work.
Apart from his academic background in mathematics, Richard has developed a specific interest and expertise in age-related issues of  child development, assessment and classroom management.

Ivor Marshall - Science Co-ordinator

Former Comprehensive Deputy Head
Science Graduate
Seven years experience in ITT plus work in Science consultancy in schools at KS1 and KS2.
Committed to activity based interactive science teaching with a strong cross curricular flavour.
Science is a fun subject that any pupil can engage with and learn by doing.

Ralph Silverman - ICT

Teaching experience: 30 years. This is my second headship. Honilands is a two form entry primary (possibly becoming a three form entry)

Qualifications:
Certificate of Education,
BA (hons) Sociology of Education
Ma (Educational Administration)
NPQH

It is an interesting, enjoyable and interactive subject and I have been teaching ICT theory for several years on this particular course.

Linda Snow - Professional Studies / English (poetry)

Bachelor of Education (1978) - Currently studying for a Masters Degree in Education
I have been teaching since 1979 and have worked in secondary, special and primary schools.
Currently head of 3 form entry junior school in the London Borough of Redbridge, previously head of 1 form entry primary school in Essex.
One of my areas of specialism is English and I was part of a group of teachers who worked with the current children’s laureate – Michael Rosen to produce a book on teaching poetry.
As a Headteacher I have a very secure understanding of the workings of a school and also know what trainees need to do and learn in order to become good, effective practitioners. This of course is a crucial part of the Professional Studies course.

Helen Tyler- GTP Tutor

Helen gained her Cert. Ed. and B.A., before starting her teaching career in Havering, moving to Barking and Dagenham with a post of responsibility for music. This led to a Deputy Headship in Essex before becoming, at 28, one of the youngest Head Teachers, with a post at Roydon Primary School where she gained a reputation for innovation, introducing new initiatives to support staff and pupils.

This led to an invitation from Essex for a year’s secondment to the BBC where Helen was involved in compiling and broadcasting educational features and programmes for BBC Essex.

Helen also trained as an OFSTED inspector before becoming a tutor on the GT Programme for Middlesex and Hertfordshire Universities.

Since joining FIPC in 2006, Helen has enjoyed bringing 30 years of educational experience to the team in supporting Trainees and Schools.
